And the winner is....
I knew I should have picked Olivia Colman. Always go with Olivia. Yet, here we are with another long night over and in the end, it doesn’t even matter. The Academy Awards are now another version of The Dundies, actually, I would have preferred Michael Scott as host.
Don’t get me wrong… I love it. This is the first year I did not watch it on account of my money saving service choice not carrying ABC. Really ABC and Direct? Can’t you two connect on my streaming service? I digress.
I checked Oscar winners throughout the night like some men would check Super Bowl Scores. Every so often I would turn to my wife and say, “I’m 1/1. I’m 2 for 2. 3 for 3.”
Then we get to Best Original Screenplay and Editing and that’s when my picks went off the rails. Oh Shit! Please! Don't Take My Thumbs!
Truthfully, I have not seen many films nominated this year. I have a 17-month-old little girl and a wife who refuses to see anything that doesn’t end with a happily ever after. I was lucky to see A Star is Born, which despite her obsession with the soundtrack, she still has not watched. Three words, “puppy outside garage.” Enough said, about that one.
I can usually pick out the winners and have gone the distance a few times. But this year was especially competitive as well as let's say odd. I don’t like to criticize films. I understand the difficulty of getting one made. Then to get it "Oscar Worthy" status is a pretty amazing feat. No one sets out to make a bad film. Everyone sets out to make the best film possible. Saying that. I still have the pretentious 21-year-old me in my ear whispering, "Some movies do not deserve to be here, do they? Only five deserve to be here, not ten. Others should be in there place. Or the reverse that I didn't care for that film but it has merit." Guess what? Pretentious me and laid back me both say it is ok to have an opinion. We like what we like.
I said all that ramble to say this… Your favourite movie will always be there for you to watch even if it doesn't have "nominated for an academy award," next to its name. It is always fun to see someone you like winning the big award. Last night hearing Ludwig Göransson win for Score! Legit excited! The same with Olivia Colman. It’s great Spike finally got competitive. Gaga winning Best Song. It’s just fun and that's what it should be. Above you can see my favourite films of the year. I still need to watch Roma, Vice, Blakkklansman, The Favourite, and just about every other film. There are some I won't see for a while. Some I will never see. In the end, it is just entertainment. So get entertained. Support the films you love and the filmmakers. They will make more and some will become your new favourites.
