“I can’t wait to get home, take a hot bubble bath, drink a glass of wine, and cuddle up with a good book.” I do not know how many times these words have been spoken. Book lovers and wine just go together. I’ve got the memes to back it up. It is a fact and that is very well documented and researched. Just google wine and books and all the evidence will be there especially in images.
People, families, and friends plan entire vacations around Wine Country, Wineries, exclusive restaurants that have entire meals with high priced wine pairings. Granted here in Kentucky, it is all about the Bourbon Trail. People travel to the heart of Kentucky to sample Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark, and Buffalo Trace. I suppose books and bourbon go well together, but most ladies I know reach for the wine bottle over the bourbon.
There are beautiful book quotes etched into delicate wine glasses. I get it the two go together.
I am happy for you. You look like your having fun! In books somehow wine makes scenes sexier maybe it is a character toying with the stem of her glass, wine stained lips, flushed cheeks, or there is a sweet fruity smell driving someone wild with lusty desire. Best friends meet up to share a Merlot or Cabernet and spill about their life. It seems to bind them together. People meet over a bottle. Secrets are shared and as a reader we are yelling “YES” at the book when two characters finally tell their feelings over their glasses. It makes them feel bolder. It is embedded in bookish culture. Heck it’s embedded in our culture in general.
All of those well plotted scene are fantastic. Who wouldn’t want to be well spoken, laughing, and having the gift of Dionysus? Well the answer to that question is ME! I hate wine.
I was talking to several co-workers earlier and they were going down the lists of ones I should instantly change my mind. Before you go and tell me I have not found the right one I am going to go ahead and stop you. I’ve tried them all (within reason)…the cheap purple drink in a box to the pricy grape stuff. The smell, the taste, the stains that come from it just don’t do it for me.
I suppose I will have to live among the few who hold a less fun glass in our hand. I suppose a coffee mug will have to work in Instagram photos instead. Despite my determined attitude and stubbornness I just can’t make myself like it, and that is ok! May you and all my favorite book characters continue to enjoy! I know he is a literary god, but I have every intention on ignoring Mr. Martin. He kills most of his characters anyway so why take advice from him?
Instead, just give me a bottle of Welch's Sparkling Red Grape (there is no other brand I will accept), or better yet a Dr. Pepper. I will continue being unrefined with just my book and bubble bath.
Is there something that everyone else seems to love that you just don’t like? Feel free to share!
